Myths about Tylenol need re-examining
Article Abstract:
Johnson and Johnson's (J and J) Tylenol brand of pain killers recovered most of its brand share largely because of a $300-million public relations and advertising campaign launched by the company after the capsule version of the product killed seven Chicago residents in 1982. J and J's actions in handling the scandal have been labeled a classic example of proper public relations in crisis management and has become textbook material. Yet a scrutiny of the case indicates that J and J could have recalled the product sooner and should have permanently kept its capsules from the market after 1982.
