Rail shares count the cost of improved safety
Article Abstract:
Safety concerns have acquired a new importance following the railroad disaster at Paddington, London, England. Three companies were involved in the railroad crash, and they have since seen drops in their stock prices. Go-Ahead has seen a 20% drop, Firstgroup has seen a 13% drop, and Railtrack has seen an 11% drop. The industry is likely to be affected increased levels of government intervention, and calls for greater capital spending. Railtrack is likely to bear most of the initial costs of improving safety, but is likely to pass on these costs to the operators of trains.
