Simmons: Subs would go for $2 billion starting in '09

US Rep. Rob Simmons, member of the US House Armed Services Committee advised the US Navy of the offer by General Dynamics Corp. unit Electric Boat and Northrop Grumman Corp. to build Virginia Class submarines for around $2 billion apiece. This offer comes with the provison that the Navy should agree to a long-term contract for buying two submarines a year starting 2009 instead of 2012.

Lawmakers assail Navy budget, but eye non-nuke subs
Article Abstract:
Some lawmakers from submarine-building states are interested in knowing whether the United States should move to building much cheaper, and more affordable submarines with conventional power instead of nuclear reactors. Considering this some Navy leaders acknowledged that fiscal constraints are forcing them to buy fewer ships than they would in better fiscal times.
