The dangers of protectionism
Article Abstract:
Protectionism is popular is seen by some as a suitable response to uncomfortable dislocation in some domestic industries. Some negative effects of protective trade barriers are described. Consumer prices rise and choice is limited in the marketplace. Distortion is created in the workplace by attempts to save low, value-add jobs at the expense of more productive ones. Retaliatory measures may be effected by other countries that could seriously disrupt the global economy. The free market tradition and its inherent competitive spirit should enable US business to overcome crises in confidence and devise a strategy for success.
