When liposuction turns into lobotomy
Article Abstract:
Corporate restructuring is carried out in order to boost return on equity. It may be carried out to benefit equity investors by increasing their wealth, or for other reasons such as to cut costs, or retain control over prices by increasing monopoly power. Restructuring may occur as a result of European monetary union, which puts pressure on companies to boost return on equity, since exchange rates cannot be altered to attract investment. Restructuring can damage relationships with skilled workers and suppliers, so cause damage to companies, as well as boosting unemployment in the economy as a whole.

Merger giants set to make their mark in 2000
Article Abstract:
Mergers and acquisitions are likely to have a major impact in 2000. Technological change is affecting the media sector and this has prompted a merger between United News and Media and Carlton. Granada could be prompted to make a bid, possibly for Scottish Media. Meanwhile, Bank of Scotland and Royal Bank of Scotland have both bid for NatWest, and American Home Products and Pfizer are competing to acquire Warner Lambert. Vodaphone is seeking to acquire Mannesmann, and no clear schedule can be forecast since such hostile bids are not common in Germany.
