A State's Assembly Controls OA Systems
Article Abstract:
The Maryland Legislative Information Service (MLIS) uses computers to improve information flow and to cut paperwork. MLIS is planning to use a computerized system to handle a recent request for revised fiscal notes following each committee action on a bill. Legislators and the general public are able to check on the status of any bill before the General Assembly by using terminals located in either private offices or public buildings. Private interest groups and state and local agencies that are interested in the progress of bills are potential customers for MLIS terminals. By providing limited access to the General Assembly's mainframe on a fee basis, MLIS officials hope to defray system costs.

OA Implemented in Senate Chamber
Article Abstract:
Because senators often need up-to-date information on the Senate Floor, a small quiet microcomputer, the Compass Computer 1101 made by Grid Systems Corp., and a small Hewlett-Packard Think Jet printer have been installed in the Senate Chamber. The computer, which features a silent, full-size keyboard, and the printer were placed on specially designed shelves where they do not affect the Senate's historic character.
