Micrographics - Evolving to Meet User Needs
Article Abstract:
The micrographics marketplace now requires products to accomplish more of the total business transaction since image delivery systems must interface with other business activities in an organization. Document retrieval systems are evolving toward optical disk storage, remote transmission, and display. The optical disk, the latest product in the image processing marketplace, makes it possible to integrate digital scanner input, word and text processing input, and management graphic image storage and retrieval. Source document service companies are beginning to move into integrated systems with services such as cross-indexing and intelligent microfilm systems. A photograph of workstations and a document storage cost comparison table are included.

Plugging COM into an Automated System
Article Abstract:
The integrated electronic office system employs a mix of hardware and media. Seventy per cent of source documents are paper. To be truly automated, a system will use an optical scanner on the documents or a micrographic computer-assisted retrieval (CAR) system. An exemplary computer output microfilm (COM) system is described and diagrammed, using software to establish an index data base with microfilm images which are sent to a connecting CAR minicomputer and CAR workstation. New documents are filmed, indexed at the workstation, and integrated into the CAR system to be used in graphics and other output. System designers should consider that COM may be replaced as optical disk storage costs decline.

What's New in Micrographics: Tools of Automation - Part I
Article Abstract:
Micrographics is an integral part of office automation and information management, providing the technology for hard copy storage and retrieval of documents. This preview of the April 1984 Association for Information and Image Management thirty- third annual conference and exposition cites micrographics as an emerging technology in office automation. Photographs of various retrieval technologies exhibited include the Minolta MinCAR, the Kodak IMT-150 microimage terminal, the Micropoint II CAR System from 3M, the NCR 5310, and the Electronic Document Gathering Environment (EDGE) from A.B. Dick.
