They Started Small and Got Big Results
Article Abstract:
First place winner of the 1984 Office Automation Awards is the Bayvet division of Miles Laboratories in Shawnee, Kansas. The center of the veterinary-products company's system is an IBM 4331 mainframe. Each evening, a Datapoint Datashare station polls forty-one distribution center minicomputers and sends their day's transactions to the mainframe. Back orders have been significantly reduced. Managers are receiving training on Multiplan software. R&D uses the Statistical Analysis System for accumulating and organizing data for FDA approvals. The New Animal Drug Application Library is being computerized on word processors. All areas can communicate through Central Communications Systems electronic mail. A diagram of the entire multifunctional system is included.

Results of Lonex Study to Be Announced
Article Abstract:
The LONEX study results, an examination of how office automation (OA) increases organizational productivity, will be presented at the Syntopican XIII conference. LONEX (Laboratory-Office Network Experiment) was conducted by the U.S. Air Force's Rome, New York Air Development Center. Office automation capabilities were interfaced with an organization's management information and data processing systems as well as a local area network. Five elements are key in the successful implementation of an OA system: provide top management support; bring the system to the user; do not use a prototype; include user needs in the design and produce an eloquent system.
