10,000 free PCs will go to best prospects

Start-up firm Free PC Inc of Pasadena, CA, has announced that it will give 10,000 free PCs to people who agree to receive target advertising as part of its test program. The company said that the PCs are Compaq Presario desktop models loaded with free Internet access and e-mail capabilities. Free PC Inc are collecting data through a brief questionnaire at its Web site www.freepc.com, where consumers submit information asked by the company.

Computer purchasers rank direct above retail

Direct sellers of computers scored are more reliable, offer more value and have the latest product inventory than other retailers, according to a survey of purchasing managers. Respondents in the survey, conducted by Austin, TX-based IntelliQuest, also cited the direct channel for having flexible payment options and for product availability. Direct channel, however, offers higher prices than retail, according to the respondents.
