California wants piece of e-commerce pie
Article Abstract:
The California Assembly has approved a bill in Jun 2000 that would exempt marketers from collecting sales tax on purchases made in California if they use an Internet service provider based in the state. Under the bill, which will now be reviewed by the state's Senate, companies should collect sales tax on all purchases made in the state, either through the Internet or a store, regardless of whether the companies are physically present in the state. If enacted into law, the bill could generate $14 million for California.
