DMers oppose EC's VAT decision
Article Abstract:
The Direct Marketing Assn is opposing a tax proposal from the European Commission that it deems will make US firms unwitting tax collectors for European Union (EU) member countries. The proposal, which could take effect in Oct 2000, direct Internet-based retailers to register in the EU where they plan to conduct business and pay the value-added-tax that the particular country imposes. The US does not impose a tax on digitally downloaded goods such as videos, music and software.
