House in downtown Memphis provides splendid views
Article Abstract:
The WKNO Auction house boasts of being Memphis' first single-family house built in the 20th century. Cited as the Best in the East South Central Region in the Best in American Living Awards, the design sparked the development of what was known as Mud Island. Both architect and developer explored the riverfront village concept and applied it to the house's design. Major spaces were arranged so as to have a view of downtown Memphis and a park. The ground floor contains the living/dining area, carport, kitcen, breakfast area and study. The upper floor contains the bedrooms with their own baths.

Formal or informal, this house fills bill
Article Abstract:
The 1993 Best in American Living Award, Best in Region: West North Central went to a private residence in Des Moines, IO. The architect skillfully arranged the spaces so that the formal areas are in front while the informal areas are situated at the rear of the house. The formal areas reflect a more traditional motif while the informal spaces are more modern. The arrangement of spaces allows for an openness in design but retains the needed privacy for the master's bedroom situated at one side of the ground floor. Two other bedrooms which share a toilet and bath are located upstairs.

Article Abstract:
The 1993 Best in American Living Home of the Year Award went to the Krieger residence in Miami, FL. Architect Barry Sugerman overcame site constraints by designing this custom-built house along a central axis. The ground floor contains the living/dining and family area which separates from the central axis, a kitchen, breakfast nook and a media room. Two bedrooms, toilet and bath facilities and one guestroom are also provided. The master suite occupies the upper floor and overlooks the pool area. Geometric stucco finish and a modern design make up the residence's facade.
