Simpler windows cost less, still add drama
Article Abstract:
Denver architect Mike Kephart suggests some construction methods that can result in cost savings without necessarily sacrificing design impact. Four individual nine-panel windows will serve equally well in place of a single window with double-hung transomes and semi-circular top and will cost only about $500. Kephart also suggests the use of trusses instead of conventional roof framing. This will enable designers to create bigger spaces and volumes while keeping the design more cost-effective.

Redesign saves 13% on hard costs
Article Abstract:
Developer and architect Edward Coplon of The Edwards Group worked with Sylvan Joseph Architects to redesign phase two of Wildflower Hills housing development in New York. The new Forester model has similar room sizes with its predecessor, the Aspen plan, but its overall area has been slightly reduced. Another alteration entailed the transfer of the door from the garage to open instead towards the porch. This provided a better site for the foyer closet.

Revised plans yield product that builds for $4 less per square foot
Article Abstract:
A-M Homes collaborated with Bassenian/Lagoni Architects to create new housing designs that would retain its appeal to buyers while being more cost-effective. The new designs eliminated extra corners and used more simple framing and roof plans. The result cost $45 dollars per square foot, $4 dollars less than the original design. The use of trusses generated the most cost savings in terms of materials and labor.
