Channels to Burn
Article Abstract:
American cable television companies are being forced to retract some promises which they made in order to receive city franchises. Construction costs have been higher than estimated. Viewers and advertising have not materialized to create the 80-100 channels promised. Warner Amex Cable, which has franchises in several large cities, lost over seventy million dollars in 1983, and is requesting help from the cities. Warner Amex's chairman admits that viewers are confused by too many channels. Despite its many problems cable television is now in forty per cent of American homes and will be in seventy per cent by 1990.

As the Barn Begins To Burn
Article Abstract:
The agricultural policy of the European Economic Community (EEC) is an area of controversy. It seems that the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) may break down in 1984. Some actions which might avoid breakdown include an agreement on reform, a price freeze, and absorbing the balance of 1983 money carried forward into the 1984 budget.
