An outrageous optimist finds freedom in the cells
Article Abstract:
Philosopher Daniel Dennett discusses his study of the human condition through computers and robots and his belief that the raw materials provided by nature have made us wonderful things and that evolution will make us ever freer in the light of the launch of his latest book "Freedom Evolves". Dennett argues that his fascination with computers is not evidence that he has abandoned the field of philosophy, stating that he believes that computers can keep you honest in a way that philosophers have sought for some time and that artificial intelligence is a new, better way of doing certain sorts of philosophy.

Mann vs military giant
Article Abstract:
Michael Mann, sociologist, believes that the US invasion of Iraq is a certain disaster spawned by a regime that exhibits policies of incoherent imperialism. He contends, in the light of the publication of his latest book, "Incoherent Empire", that "the American empire will turn out to be a military giant, a back-seat economic driver, a political schizophrenic and an ideological phantom". He defends his arguments, stating that he is not claiming that the US is uncivilised or barbaric, just that its policies are incoherent and inherently self-defeating.

Lesson 1: difficulty of being excellent
Article Abstract:
George Steiner, eminent philosopher and critic, discusses "Lessons of the Masters", his new book on learning and teaching, and his attitudes towards teachers and teaching. Steiner states that he would be happy if his current book was read as an attempt to remind today's disenchanted academics - who hold a disenchantment that he completely understands in a society that rewards a newcomer to the City more highly than a respected professor - of the joys of teaching.
