Blair's capital hearing aides
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour government see academic research as having an important advisory role. A research centre led by the London School of Economics and Political Science and involving other London based universities has been established. The role of Oxford University as a political adviser is unclear. Some observers have suggested Prime Minister Tony Blair prefers to use the local London universities rather than travel to Oxford. Others have pointed out Oxford is not known for its interest in education and social policy research which are of particular interest to the government.

Earning power that depends on learning
Article Abstract:
Higher education is a key element in efforts to boost the economy of north-west England, a region adversely affected by the decline in traditional manufacturing. Education and business leaders are working together in an umbrella group, the North West Partnership. The Northwest has 18 higher education institutions and 65 further and higher education colleges and is the third most popular area in which to study in the UK. However universities complain that the graduates they produce are lured away from the region by better wages and career opportunities in the south.

The living document
Article Abstract:
The growing interest in oral history, in the UK, has been confirmed in a 1998 study of British universities, which found over 60 departments were running courses involving oral history. There is some concern academics are publishing accounts of oral history without getting permission. Some academics suggest oral history is unreliable. Whilst others point out it is a way of allowing ordinary people to tell their story. The British Broadcasting Corporation has oral history project, involving 8,000 contributors, as part of its millenium celebrations.
