I dream of genomes
Article Abstract:
Maverick scientist Craig Venter is confident that his privately-funded laboratory, Celera Genomics, will be the first to decode mankind's genetic blueprint. Venter declares that he and his wife, fellow scientist Claire Fraser, have accomplished a great deal with a small research team by doing things that everyone else deemed impossible. He is convinced that his team of 30-40 scientists will complete its work ahead of the Human Genome Project. Venter sees nothing wrong with patenting genes and declares that Celera Genomics will make its findings available for a price.

In Goebbel's shadow
Article Abstract:
Public Opinion Pollster Doctor Elizabeth Noelle-Neuman has been accused of having worked for Joseph Goebbels, a Nazi Politician, during the Second World War. She is also accused of spreading Nazi beliefs to students in US and European universities. Professor Christopher Simpson suggests that Noelle-Neuman's early work as a journalist shows that she was part of the group which acted against Jewish people in Germany. Noelle-Neuman has apologized for her past but has also verbally attacked Simpson's views. Noelle-Neuman was born in Germany during 1916.

The execution of justice
Article Abstract:
William McFeely, historian, has research the death penalty in the US for his 'Proximity to Death'. There has been little debate on the death penalty in the US for some time. McFeely is opposed to the death penalty, partly but not solely because it is tied up with race in the US. Prosecutors tend to be white, and there is little trust in the police among African Americans. Poorer people are more likely to be executed, and black people are more likely to be poor. Availability of firearms is also an important factor affecting homicide rates.
