Most PhDs desert academe
Article Abstract:
Around 60% of UK PhDs in biomedical, engineering and physical sciences leave academia for industry as soon as they get their qualifications, according to the "What Do PhDs Do?" report produced by the UK GRAD programme. The report, which also reveals that only about 30% to 35% of PhDs from the arts, humanities, social sciences and economics leave the academic sector, states that the figures raise questions about how universities in the UK retain PhD students and sustain the country's teaching base.

PhDs push for status change
Article Abstract:
Eurodoc, the European-wide organisation of PhD candidates, is to vote in 2005 on whether PhD candidates should be classed as employees or students. While the majority of PhDs across Europe are in favour of the change to employee status, the situation in the UK is not quite so clear cut as students do not have to pay tax, whereas employees do, and there are fears that employment could damage academic freedom.

Seven-year hitch casts doubt on future of part-time PhDs
Article Abstract:
