Article Abstract:
A research student at Middlebury College in Vermont argues that it is an university's responsibility to make sure that the hours a student spends outside of the classroom are integrated with classroom time if the student is to get the most out of the time at university. It is argued that the current moves towards treating higher education as an industrial process to be managed rather than a human process to be cultivated will only result in students getting less out of their time at university and harm the educational experience of students.

Boost social value by making a united stand
Article Abstract:
The director of strategy and corporate planning at York St. John College argues that higher education needs to work collectively if it is to serve a wider social purpose than simply training students for jobs. It is contended that higher education needs to be largely independent and free from an enforced reliance on alternative income streams if it is to effectively prepare people to understand the complexity of the world around them.
