Poor pay sends lecturers away
Article Abstract:
African universities are having difficulties attracting and keeping academic staff. The difficulties they face include overcrowding, financial constraints and buildings in a bad state of repair. Some 23,000 lecturers have left their posts in recent years, and some universities have more than 30% unfilled vacancies. The rapid spread of AIDS, low participation in higher education by women and a low research base have added to the universities problems. In spite of this many African countries have expanded their university systems.
