Taking a reign check
Article Abstract:
The way that the United Kingdom monarchy has been protrayed in paintings reflects the attitudes of the public toward the monarchy. The royal family was portrayed as cosily taking tea after the 1939-1945 war, and is seen as accessible and paternalistic. A romanticised portrait of Queen Elizabeth ll by Pietro Annigoni was criticised by some as showing her to be tired and sad, yet it attracted large numbers of people who viewed the picture with deference. The location of royal portraits in the National Portrait Gallery, London, lends an air of religious awe to the portraits.

Taking the lonely out of distance learning
Article Abstract:
The Bradford Management Centre is adapting rapidly to the needs of corporate clients and a study into methods of student centred open learning at a distance has found that existing methods are not satisfactory. This is because learning material soon becomes dated, interaction is programmed and the learning experience is lonely. A new programme provides residential courses and a close link of tutors with the executives. Material is distributed on a CD-Rom and videoconferencing is used.
