'Threat' to research careers
Article Abstract:
Salford University's vice-chancellor, Michael Harloe, has warned Higher Education Minister Bill Rammell that career opportunities for young academics are threatened as cash for research becomes concentrated in fewer university departments. As more departments are denied resources due to increased selectivity in research funding, the 'supply chain; of rising academic stars could be cut off.

Cut-throat RAE rivalry makes filling vacancies even harder
Article Abstract:
Universities are finding it difficult to fill job vacancies as competition for staff hots up in the run-up to the RAE. One quarter of higher education institutions surveyed in 2005 expected it to become more diofficult to recruit staff due to competition to hire the best people ahead of the RAE in 2008.
