V-cs put case for cash to keep UK competitive
Article Abstract:
An additional UKPd8.8 bil must be invested in higher education in England and Northern Ireland over the next two years in order to maintain competitiveness, claimed Universities UK (UUK) in its submission to this year's spending review. Ivor Crewe, president of UUK, argues that a well-funded higher education sector of international standing and excellence is vital to the success of the country as a whole and that additional public investment in higher education in as investment in the long-term economic and social prosperity of the nation.

Hefce expands roll numbers by 30,000
Article Abstract:
The Higher Education Funding Council for England has allocated 30,000 new student places at universities for 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. Brighton and Teeside universities are the biggest winners in the process, gaining 1,108 and 1,090 new places respectively.
