War on 'superbugs.'(University of Leeds' Antimicrobial Research Centre; Medical Research)
Article Abstract:
The Antimicrobial Research Centre (ARC) was established at the University of Leeds, England, in Oct. 1996 to work on the discovery and development of new antibiotics at a time when antibiotic-resistant 'superbugs' are emerging. The appearance of new strains of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics has raised the possibility of incurable bacterial pneumonia and tuberculosis. The ARC aims to attract at least a further 6 million pounds sterling of research funding over the next three years to support its work which will involve the use of rational, structure-based drug design.

Passport to the world: Charles Sturt is a small university with big ideas
Article Abstract:
Charles Sturt University in New South Wales was launched into the Australian university sector six years ago, and has nearly doubled its student enrolments and invested over 35 million Australian dollars in capital development. This is despite claims by critics that a regional and vocationally oriented university would never work. The university is also developing a strong international profile and it is a major provider of distance education.
