...think universities need to start a campaign for true dissent
Article Abstract:
Universities and university research need to foster a form of scepticism based on Enlightenment thought if fundamentalists of all types are to be combatted. It is argued that universities, which are meant to be places where the ideas that are put forward as unquestionable truths by fundamentalists of all stripes are subjected to rigorous scrutiny and debate, are the ideal place to foster scepticism, and that the alternative to scepticism is a world run by warring groups of true believers.

...think universities need to respond more to changes in society
Article Abstract:
Universities in the United Kingdom need to address the changing face of society and develop courses that are globally based, which address the experiences of students coming from all areas of society. It is contended that interaction and debate are crucial in the classroom and that the disparate cultures that students come from are a massive resource that can be shared.

...believe cultivating scepticism is the real value of the university
Article Abstract:
The professor of critical theory at Sunderland University argues that one of the purposes of universities is to cultivate a sceptical nature towards anything, subjecting all ideas to methodical scrutiny and criticism. It is contended that what our society really needs is more doubt and questioning and less belief in order to arrest the slide into dogmatism.
