Brisk market spurs creativity in camcorder functions, performance
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers of camcorders and similar video-processing equipment for consumer use are focusing on improving the performance and functionality of their products. Among these add-on features are extended-life batteries, LCD monitors, digital formats, multi-screen capability, compact dimensions and light weight and compatibility with a personal computer. This comes as the Electronics Industries Assn of Japan forecasts that the worldwide market for camcorders will increase by 5.3% annually, while the Japanese market will grow by 4.4% per year.

MPEG compression, fine density expand camcorder capabilities
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers of camcorders who prefer to use memory cards, optical discs and hard discs in their products should employ compression technologies to be competitive with camcorders using magnetic tape. These technologies include the Moving Picture Experts Group Phase 4 (MPEG-4) and MPEG-2. The MPEG4 is an extremely efficient coding system for use in products relating to mobile communications and the Internet, while MPEG2 operates as a coding system for moving images and audio specifically for DVDs and digital TV broadcasts.

MPEG-4 handles low bit rates, proves resilient against errors
Article Abstract:
The Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is preparing the MPEG4 standard for coding video and audio signals at very low bit rates. The standard will be issued in two stages because of the delays in the development process. Version 1 will include basic functions for extremely efficient coding, and will become an official standard in Dec 1998. Version 2, will include functions absent in Version 1 such as tiling wavelet, and will be adopted as standard in 2000.
