Makers strive to add convenience, other functions to digital cameras

Digital camera manufacturers are improving the functions and features of their products to distinguish them from those of their rivals. Four Japanese firms, namely Canon Inc, Fuji Photo Film Co Ltd, Matsushita Kotobuki Electronics Industries Inc and Victor Co of Japan Ltd (JVC), compete to offer cameras with enhanced capabilities. Some of these products include Canon's IXY Digital and PowerShot G1, Fuji's FinePix40i, JVC's GC-X3 or Pixstar, and Matsushita's Panasonic ipalm. Prices are Y74,800 for IXY and Y115,000 for Powershot G1: Y88,000 for FinePix40i; Y125,000 for GC-X3; and Y95,000 for ipalm.

Moving picture functions push digital still cameras into video market
Article Abstract:
Sanyo Electric Co Ltd is developing technology for lengthening the moving picture time of digital still cameras and improving their picture quality to produce a camera with a high-level moving-picture shooting functions. The company expects that this product can replace existing digital video cameras. In bringing this vision close to reality, Sanyo has launched two new digital cameras, namely the IDC-1000Z iDshot and the VPC-SX550MD. The iDshot will be available in Japan in Feb 2001 and in Europe and the US in spring of the year.

JVC markets digital cameras in U.S., European arenas
Article Abstract:
Victor Company of Japan Ltd (JVC) has begun selling its digital cameras in Europe and the US. JVC's GC-X1 camera was launched in these regions in Jun 2000. The product is said to have excellent image quality, resolutions and wide dynamic range. In addition, it incorporates a 3.3 million pixel CCD and has a pixel shift mode capable of capturing images that carry the equivalent of 6 million pixels.
