Replacement demand to buoy Japanese mobilecom
Article Abstract:
The Japanese mobile phone market expects another year of growth in 1999 after sustaining a gain of 3 million units in 1998, with total units rising between 24 to 26 million units. Moreover, new subscribers would account for just seven to eight million units of the total, which is lower than the 10 million new subscribers in 1998 and 1997. However, replacement demand will outpace new demand for 1999. Lower call rates, decreasing unit sizes and rising sophistication of the equipment are cited as factors that will sustain market growth.

Portable phones draw millions of users in Japan
Article Abstract:
Low rates, appealing promotions and extended-battery operation have made portable phones very popular in Japan. There were an estimated 10.65 million subscribers in 1997, and the number is expected to grow by seven to eight million users by 1998. Manufacturers also expect sales of portable phones to reach 17 to 18 million in 1998, similar to the volume sold in 1997. On the other hand, Japan's Personal Handy Phone System lost 72,000 subscribers between April and May 2000.
