Aluminium composites are formed for cars
Article Abstract:
A Brite Euram European consortium is developing an aluminium composite which will be cheap enough for use in the automobile industry. The metal matrix comprises a Duralcan aluminium-magnesium alloy and a Duralcan aluminium-copper alloy. The academic and industrial consortium is taking particular care to ensure that the particles, which are around 20 um wide, are evenly distributed in the matrix. The main advantage of the composite is its resistance to wear, which makes brake discs the most obvious application in the automobile industry.

Real accidents make safer cars
Article Abstract:
The UK Transport Research Laboratory has developed realistic tests for car crash assessment. It has replaced head-on brick wall collisions for testing. New tests assess cars' safety under side impact. Their findings suggest safety improvements need not increase costs. Light-weight doors are preferred to greater reinforcement.
