Linear sensors break size barrier
Article Abstract:
Penny and Giles Position Sensors has developed a non-contact linear sensor with a diameter of 3.2mm. The Variable Resistive Vector Transformer (VRVT) has developed from linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) and linear variable inductance transformers (LVITs). The VRVT will compete with existing linear potentiometers due to cost advantages in mass production, durability and reliability. Major applications include pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders, automated production methods and automobile suspensions.

Sensors advance with established technologies
Article Abstract:
Commercial sensor manufacturers are aiming to offer value for money and improved performance to design engineers, and these improvements can be based on existing technologies. Examples include Schlumberger Farnborough's resonant beam pressure sensor and Endevco's two new accelerometers. Other research programs are focusing on smart materials that can sense and react to changes in their environment.
