Estimation of surface water quality changes in response to land use change: application of the export coefficient model using remote sensing and Geographical Information System
Article Abstract:
Export coefficient model are used to estimate the quality of surface water on the basis of land use data derived through remote satellite sensing and from Geographical Information System (GIS). A model using the GIS framework was successfully applied to compute nitrogen loading in South Lincolnshire, UK. Export coefficient is an index of the total amount of nutrient lost to the water in various land use types. The high solute concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous in surface water, especially in rural watersheds of developed countries, result from the intensified use of fertilizers and agriculture.
