Regional economic benefits of environmental management at the US Department of Energy's major nuclear weapons sites
Article Abstract:
The US Dept of Energy (DOE) spends more than 70% of its environmental management budget at only five sites. This extensive investment should have a significant impact on the local economy. Indeed, research into DOE environmental management spending has established that more than 8% of the gross regional product in the areas around the Hanford site in Richland, WA, the Idaho National Environmental Engineering Laboratory and the Savannah River site in South Carolina is produced by DOE environmental management expenditures. In all five cases, regional economies would significantly benefit from rises in the DOE environmental management budget.
