Education in California: the age of turmoil and hope
Article Abstract:
California public schools face the challenge of a sharply increasing school enrollment with a high proportion of students who are unskilled in English or require other special services. Family breakdown and rising crime on school campuses are also expanding school roles at a time when financial resources available for education are declining. School successes include an increase in the number of seniors taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test, an increase in the length of the school year and a decrease in the dropout rate.

California's "Dixie."
Article Abstract:
There are several key political similarities between Central Valley, CA, and the southern US, with both regions highly influenced by the rural mindset. The historic identification of the Valley with the Democratic Party declined during 1970-1999, with voters increasingly supporting the GOP, as in the South. The GOP relies on a large victory margin in Central Valley as vital for statewide victory. Some observers believe the influence of agricultural concerns will decline, while the Latino influence will gain importance.

A new shade for California
Article Abstract:
Observers speculate as to how newly elected California Gov Joseph Graham Davis would deal with his new position after realizing his dream of becoming governor. Most think of Gray Davis as a role player. It was surprising to see him take his time over key appointments in government. Everybody concedes that he is cautious, methodical and determined. If he is to succeed in his new role, however, he has to learn to delegate.
