Dick Murphy: a calming hand on San Diego's troubled waters

After just four months in office, the newly-elected mayor of San Diego, Dick Murphy, has introduced a more open and casual style to city government. Although the former Superior Court judge inherited some major problems, including the San Diego Padres baseball stadium project, environmental issues, and traffic gridlock, he is creating task forces and dealing directly with each challenge.

Richard Riordan: an unexpected rescuer for L.A.'s tattered metropolis

In 1993 Richard Riordan was elected mayor of a city torn apart by riots, gang violence and he vowed to reform city government bring back civic pride to Los Angeles. Now in his second term, the sometimes controversial Riordan has used the buoyant US economy to effect major expansion and building projects, which have boosted new trade.
