A report by Catholics for a Free Choice says that mergers between Catholic and non-Catholic hospitals create problems when it comes to reproductive services. The report notes that when Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center merged with St. Joseph Health System in 1994, hospital executives had to agree not to offer most fertility treatments, sterilizations and perform abortions.
