Prediction of hospital failure: a post-PPS analysis
Article Abstract:
Discrimant analysis is used to build models that predict the probability of failure for two types of hospitals, nonprofit and proprietary. Based on the Prospective Payment System, predictions of financial health depend on several variables, including leverage, liquidity, efficiency and profitability, plus local market share and average length of stay. Both financial and nonfinancial causes of hospital closure are discussed, and previous studies are listed.

Article Abstract:
A 10-year review has determined that joint ownership of Middle Tennessee Medical Center (MTMC) by Baptist Hospital and Saint Thomas Hospital has been beneficial. Health care has been enhanced through renovations and additions made possible by $52 million in capital improvements. Admissions rose by 12% since 1986, and the medical center serves patients between Chattanooga and Nashville. Operation costs have remained under budget.
