A 20-year-old woman with chronic otitis media
Article Abstract:
A 20-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital because of a chronic ear infection called otitis media. Her right eardrum had perforated and was covered with mucus. Two years before admission, she had tested positive for tuberculosis but a chest X-ray was normal. Antibiotics and corticosteroids did not improve her condition. A chest X-ray revealed a small scar in her right upper lobe. Throat cultures grew Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis. Although tuberculosis in the ear is rare, this patient grew up in China, where tuberculosis is much more common than in the US.

Prevalence of various respiratory viruses in the middle ear during acute otitis media
Article Abstract:
A vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus might reduce the incidence of otitis media. Otitis media is an inflammation or infection in the middle ear. Researchers analyzed fluid samples from the ears and nasal passages of 456 children with otitis media. Forty-one percent of the children were infected with a virus. Respiratory syncytial virus was the most common virus and 74% of the children with the virus in their nose also had it in their ear. Parainfluenza viruses and influenza viruses were also detected in many children.
