Anaemia in pregnancy: possible causes and risk factors in Nepali women
Article Abstract:
A new study investigates the importance of diet and infections in the development of anemia in pregnant Nepalese women. The study of pregnant women attending Patan Hospital, Kathmandu, shows that there are high levels of nutritional deficiencies and infection, including low s-ferratin levels, while hookworm infection, low s-vitamin A, and elevated s-C-reactive protein are present in severely anemic women. It is suggested that vitamin A supplements should be considered, together with dietary advice and treatment of infections.

Dietary intake of cobalamin in elderly people who have abnormal serum cobalamin, methylmalonic acid and homocysteine levels
Article Abstract:
Poor intake of cobalamin does not cause mildly abnormal cobalamin status in the elderly. This was revealed by a study that sought to determine if cobalamin-related abnormalities among the elderly are caused by a poor diet. The study also found that mild cobalamin deficiency in the elderly could be due to nondietary factors, such as malabsorption. Cobalamin status was assessed through serum cobalamin, methylmalonic acid and homocysteine determinations while a one-year food-frequency questionnaire determined cobalamin intake.
