Assisted-suicide measures failing in the legislatures
Article Abstract:
Oregon remains the only state that legalizes a physician's assistance in the suicide of a terminally ill person. The New Mexico Medical Society changed its official positions to neutral, but the legislature failed to pass the measures. Also, the California Medical Assn backed away from its decision not to oppose such a law. The positions of medical societies in other states are described.

Tobacco's big breaks in Capitol
Article Abstract:
Physicians should support local efforts to ban tobacco smoking and regulate the sale of tobacco to minors. Physicians can help by lobbying for local legislation and offering medical advice. Local governments should also restrict smoking in public areas since second-hand smoke is harmful. The tobacco industry, however, probably will not face legislative controls from Congress during 1995.
