Baby talk
Article Abstract:
Cot death has such a high profile that parents think it is more of a danger than it really is. New theories about what causes the deaths increase parents's fears when, in fact, it occurs in only 400 out of 668,000 live births each year. The rate fell from 12 per 1,000 live births in 1980 to 6.2 in 1994 yet requests for information have increased from 500 in 1990 to 10,000. The Foundation for the Study of Infant deaths (FSID) needs to consider the extent to which it is undermining parents's confidence and also the socio-economic factors which are involved in cot death.

Lashings of double standards
Article Abstract:
Saudi Arabian justice which is being imposed on two British nurses is criticized for being too punitive, however, expatriates know the consequences of breaking the law and should be careful not to do so. The British government supported the Saudi regime during the Gulf war and defence companies with vested interests are anxious not to upset their Saudi customers by being openly critical. The government often does not interfere in such cases if it is politically awkward to do so. Nurses in the UK would not have to go abroad to find work if the their pay was increased.

Prying tonight
Article Abstract:
Improving social housing, education and child care facilities could be more beneficial to women suffering from physical violence than interference from social workers. Pregnancy is a common time for women to experience violence, according to a report carried out by the UK Department of Health, with up to 33% of women claiming to have been involved in a domestic situation. A women's wishes must be respected when dealing with domestic violence, as many women do not wish to report such attacks.
