Effect of dietary energy density on total ad-libitum energy consumption by recovering malnourished children
Article Abstract:
The effect of dietary energy density on total energy consumption of malnourished children was evaluated by giving high-density (HD) and low-density (LD) diets at fixed intervals and frequency until the child refuses to eat. Results showed a higher amount consumed with LD but higher energy value with HD. Total daily intakes for HD diets were constant but LD diets showed increased intakes in the first two to four days. These findings reflect attempts of LD groups to compensate for the lower dietary density by increasing daily intakes.

Predictors of growth from 1 to 18 months among breast-fed Ghanaian infants
Article Abstract:
A new study examines the factors linked to physical growth in breast-fed Ghanaian infants during their first 18 months of life. The study shows negative correlation between diarrhea, fever and growth during the first year of life. No relationship is discovered between respiratory infections and growth nor between dietary variables and growth, other than zinc uptake. Maternal education is positively related to growth in infants aged between 1 and 18 months.

Lack of therapeutic efficacy of vitamin A for non-cholera, watery diarrhoea in Bangladeshi children
Article Abstract:
The effect of vitamin A therapy on the severity and duration of acute episodes of non-cholera, watery diarrhea was studied in clinical trials conducted on 83 children afflicted by diarrhea. It was shown that the administration of vitamin A has no effect on the nutritional status and severity of the diarrhea and can thus be given safely to augment hepatic reserves during diarrheal illness.
