Emergency action
Article Abstract:
A National Health Service Trust appointed two emergency psychiatric nurses (EPNs) to assess patients who present with mental health problems and also to liaise with other professionals who deal with these patients. The EPNs carry out risk assessments on patients using national guidelines to see if they need to be admitted or given medication. Patients who are fit to be discharged have a treatment plan drawn up, or relevant agencies are contacted. The EPNs try to build up a therapeutic relationship with the patients but sometimes sedation is required if patients are very disturbed.

Article Abstract:
Community psychiatric nurses (CPNs) have a range of career options, including work in the criminal justice system and work with housing associations, but their attachment to a primary health care team is increasingly common. Models of employment in primary care vary from full-time attachment to a doctor's surgery to employment for a few sessions. Academics and managers express concern that CPNs in primary care are concentrating on patients who are not seriously ill, but practitioners point to the preventative aspects and to their ability to prioritize workloads.
