Nation's two largest physician management firms become one

The merger of physician management companies PhyCor Inc. and MedPartners Inc. combines the management of about 35,000 physicians in all 50 states. The new firm will be headed by Joseph C. Hutts, pres and ceo of PhyCor. Some physicians in group practice affected by the merger express optimism about coming changes in management, in spite of expected layoffs.

Physicians and the public remain wary of managed care despite the program's proven ability to bring down medical inflation. Managed care has slowed inflation to its smallest rate in nearly 40 years, 4.4% in 1996. But doctors and patients alike are concerned that the program restricts access to needed medical care and creates complex administrative issues.
