Extended mental health service improves client well-being
Article Abstract:
Surrey Heartlands National Health Service Trust has developed an intensive outreach programme for clients with mental health problems. The programme is based on an integrated model offering intensive case management, prompt intervention and crisis response services. Senior nursing staff known as intensive outreach workers are used to provide intensive outreach work. The programme includes an extended hours service which compliments continuity of care. It has been shown that intensive case management can bring positive results in social and clinical terms, but this approach can be expensive.

Paramedics of the mind
Article Abstract:
Research needs to be undertaken to discover the best way to provide psychiatric care from ambulance personnel. Paramedics are usually ill-equiped to deal with psychiatric emergencies, relying instead on accident & emergency staff for assessment. UK mental health organisations are calling for the implementation of key improvements in the provision of psychiatric emergencies. Improved communication lines between mental health workers and ambulance staff would increase understanding of job requirements and skills.
