Growing up with chronic illness: the experience of growing up with cystic fibrosis

Article Abstract:

Patients with a long-term life-threatening illness such as cystic fibrosis (CF) may share similar life experiences. Interviews were conducted with 10 adult patients with CF. Common experiences included others' preoccupations with their expected life span, being labeled or thought of as different, and a faithful perseverance. These experiences can help enlighten nurses in managing patients with CF in a caring manner.

Article Abstract:

Several strategies may help patients with long-term lung disease reclaim a sense of control. A sense of control can be vital to a person's physical, developmental, mental, and spiritual health. Effective controlling strategies may include keeping a diary, routinely assessing stress factors, participating in a support group, and engaging in muscle relaxing and stress reducing programs.

Chronic Sorrow: Parents' Lived Experience

Article Abstract:

The thoughts of parents of a mentally retarded adult child are presented. Their personal feelings are compared with the psychological state of chronic sorrow. One of the most difficult emotions to cope with involve the gradual recognition that a healthy environment is difficult to provide for the siblings of the mentally retarded adult child.
