Increased midtrimester amniotic fluid activin A: a risk factor for subsequent fetal death
Article Abstract:
Increased levels of activin A in the amniotic fluid of pregnant women may be a sign of fetal distress. Activin A is a protein that regulates cell proliferation and differentiation. Researchers measured the amount of activin A in samples of amniotic fluid taken from 110 pregnant women during amniocentesis. Activin A was detected in all the samples, but the level was much higher in women whose babies died before birth. Forty percent of these women had activin A levels much higher than normal.

Elevated maternal midtrimester serum free beta-human chrionic gonadotropin levels in vegetarian pregnancies that cause increased false-positive Down syndrome screening results
Article Abstract:
A study on 98 vegetarian and 122 omnivore pregnancies showed that in vegetarian pregnancies, midtrimester maternal serum, beta-human chronic gonadotropin levels increased that led to an elevated false rate in screening for Down syndrome in comparison to the pregnant women following a regular diet. To correct the increased false-positive screening results in vegetarian pregnancy, it is imperative to correct the alpha-fetoprotein and beta-human gonadotropin reference levels.

Prospective echocardiographic evaluation of atrioventricular conduction in fetuses with maternal Sjogren's antibodies
Article Abstract:
Isoimmune atrioventricular block is diagnosed, which will be important to determine the safest, most effective, and shortest duration of dexamethasone treatment. To determine whether the Doppler-derived mechanical PR interval could prospectively discriminate fetuses with incomplete atrioventricular block (AVB) that might benefit from directed transplacental steroid therapy from those with normal AV conduction.
