Learning to fly
Article Abstract:
A participant in the Royal College of Nursing's ward leadership project describes an image which has helped him put into practice the lessons learnt through the project. The project proved inspirational in giving the nurse more self-awareness, confidence and the ability to manage effectively. However, the image of his ward team standing on the edge of a precipice, wondering if they could fly with him, enabled him to understand management from the perspective of his staff and to understand that he had to provide them with the appropriate tools to move on with him.

Model partnerships
Article Abstract:
One English healthcare trust has begun work which will lead to the development of a strong, health-based model for community healthcare provision. The Ravensbourne National Health Service (NHS) Trust, Bromley, will only commission primary care groups once its model is fully developed. The development of the model is helping community nurses understand the features of the reformed NHS, including partnerships and performance accountability, and preparing them to be effective equal partners in the primary care groups.

Self-development for women in the NHS
Article Abstract:
Nurses often have to spend time managing patients, students and other professionals, but there is a lack of formal training for new management skills. There are some courses, such as the Astra programme, which was set up for women seeking a career in NHS management and involves 16 modules. A staff nurse describes how she organised a study group with a particular interest in assertiveness, and was pleased with the energy and commitment from group members.
