Muscle strength and functional mobility in relation to lean body mass in free-living frail elderly women
Article Abstract:
There are close connections between muscle strength and fat-free mass in free-living frail elderly women, according to research undertaken among 30 women from residences or out-patient facilities in Quebec, Canada. It is not known why free-living frail elderly women have a significant reduction in fat-free mass, but this could be the result of chronic inactivity or low protein or energy intake. There may also be a connection with losses that took place during an acute illness. It is vital that measures are taken to prevent depletion of fat-free mass in the elderly.

Evaluation of near infra-red interactance for assessment of subcutaneous and total body fat
Article Abstract:
A study of near infra-red interactance (NIRI), used to assess both the subcutaneous and total body fat of 54 young adults and 63 middle-aged men, revealed NIRI as equal in efficiency to skinfolds. Ultrasound, NIRI (Futrex 5000) and skinfold thickness helped measure subcutaneous adipose tissue and muscle thickness in young adults, while densitometry, NIRI and skinfold thickness helped assess total body fat in the middle-aged. NIRI was inaccurate in measuring both higher and lower levels of fat content.

Puberty begins with a characteristic subcutaneous body fat mass in each sex
Article Abstract:
Pubertal onset at different ages in boys and girls was studied and body fat mass was analyzed at the moment of pubertal onset, to determine the link between pubertal maturation changes and the development of fat mass. Puberty appears to start with a characteristic subcutaneous body fat mass, independent of age of onset, supporting the link between maturation and development of adipose tissue.
