Myelodysplastic syndrome
Article Abstract:
Patients with myelodysplastic syndrome do not have normal bone marrow function, and are unable to produce normal levels of blood cells. These individuals have abnormally low levels of circulating blood cells, and cells in the blood and bone marrow may have structural abnormalities. Fifty percent of myelodysplastic syndrome patients have bone marrow cells with chromosomal abnormalities. Myelodysplastic syndrome may be caused by the activation of oncogenes, or genes that cause cancer. There are five different types of myelodysplasia. Patients with one form of myelodysplasia usually develop acute leukemia within a year, while patients with another form can survive many years after diagnosis. Patients who have chromosomal changes may not survive as long as those who do not, and the number and type of chromosomal changes also affects survival. Patients with a mild form of the disease can be treated with transfusions of red blood cells (RBC) for many years. Those with a more severe form of the disease can undergo x an experimental therapy called differentiation induction, bone marrow transplantation, or treatment with substances that stimulate RBC production.

The myth of the abortion trauma syndrome
Article Abstract:
Some pro-life groups believe that women who have an abortion may suffer from depression, guilt and thoughts of suicide after the procedure, a condition they call abortion trauma syndrome. However, an extensive search of the medical and psychiatric literature revealed no evidence for this. In 1989, then-Surgeon General C. Everett Koop stated such in a letter to President Ronald Reagan. Women who want to terminate a pregnancy may do so because they can not support the baby or because they were a victim of rape. These women may already be in emotional distress, regardless of whether they have the baby or not. Several studies that followed women who had an abortion found that many remained mentally healthy following the procedure. A woman may feel sadness after an abortion, but this should not be taken as a sign of a post-traumatic stress disorder.

A 56-year-old woman with chronic fatigue syndrome
Article Abstract:
There appears to be a biological basis for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) even though its exact cause is unknown and there are few effective treatments. CFS is characterized by a debilitating fatigue lasting 6 months or more that is not alleviated by rest. It has many other symptoms but most are not specific for CFS. MRI scans of the brain reveal abnormalities in these patients and they also have abnormalities of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Immune activation is often found, indicating a possible infectious cause. Treatments include antidepressants, antihistamines, NSAIDs, physical activity and cognitive therapy.
