New immigration law changes IMG hiring requirements
Article Abstract:
The illegal immigration legislation signed by US Pres Bill Clinton on Sep 30, 1996, includes legislation on international medical graduates. These graduates studying in the US must have visitors' visas for three years before green cards can be obtained. These students must also obtain a 'no objection' letter from their home country before obtaining special waivers to emigrate. These individuals must get a job within 90 days of obtaining the waiver.

How confidential is the communications superhighway?
Article Abstract:
The haphazard privacy afforded by cellular and cordless phones compromises the confidentiality of physician-patient communications. Neither state medical boards nor the American Medical Association have issued formal guidelines pertaining to the ethical implications of physician use of cordless or cellular phones; legal authority makes clear, however, that users of such devices cannot expect their communications to remain private.

Advance directives
Article Abstract:
Physicians should encourage every patient, regardless of age or health, to fill out advance directives. Directives document what types of medical care a patient does or does not want. Such documents can alleviate the stress of family or friends making such decisions. Kits containing information on advance directives and relevant forms are available from the American Medical Assn and the American Assn of Retired Persons.
